Origins

In recent months, there has been a resurgence of business casual fashion giving ode to office wear of the early 2000s. With Miu Miu's F/W 2023 collection, fashion enthusiasts worldwide were enchanted through the collection's use of micro-mini skirts, cashmere cardigans, kitten heels, and muted colors. Enter: The Office Siren.

Through Miu Miu's resurgence of business casual fashion through a corporate-wear inspired collection, "Geek Chic" came back into style - but with a twist. Popular in the early 2000s, "Geek Chic" gave way to the idea of "geeks" being incorporated into the fashion world. Culturally, "geeks" are often characterized in movies through tiny-squared or oval glasses, tight-fitted business clothes, suspenders, and slick-backed hairstyles. Rather than giving way to the traditional style of the "geek," innovators of the trend - through movies like The Devil Wears Prada - gave women opportunities to dress with confidence while demonstrating their intellectual ability through the use of fashion accessories such as Bayonetta glasses and briefcases. In a male-dominated industry, the style of "Geek Chic" gives women the opportunity to challenge the stereotypes of businesswomen office-wear through structured and tailored outfits that project confidence and intelligence. "Geek Chic" is mostly made up of satin midi-skirts, kitten heels, tight-fitted blouses, and pops of dark cherry red. On the other hand, The Office Siren style takes inspiration from "Geek Chic", but makes it more streetwear and going out friendly.

The Office Siren is often characterized by its muses - Gisele Bundchen in The Devil Wears Prada and Bella Hadid - who take inspiration from Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren's ready-to-wear collections of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Brands that currently sell and design clothes in this certain style include Miu Miu, Prada, Djerf Avenue, and Jaded. But, don't worry. If the cost of the clothing is a bit too pricey, you can easily find Geek Chic/Office Siren style clothes at your local thrift store given the trends early 2000's influence.

How to Wear it:

The Office Siren trend is characterized by:

  • Micro-mini skirts

  • Pencil skirts

  • Button-down tops

  • Capri pants

  • Leather blazers

  • Pinstripes and polka dot patterns

  • Tops with "tasteful" cutouts

  • Kitten heels, boots, pumps, or Mary Janes

  • Pearls or silver jewelry

  • Under-arm shoulder bags and totes

  • Pleated skirts

Ways to Style:

  • Loose pants with tight, low-cut top

  • Micro-mini skirt with an oversized top

  • Midi skirt with a tight sweater or shirt

  • Wearing shoes such as kitten heels and pumps with stockings

After styling the outfit, you can finish the look with a claw clip, belt scarf, and glasses to add the "haute couture" factor the attire may be missing.

Additionally, the trend is characterized by muted colors including neutrals, white, black, grey, and dark red. When creating an outfit in accordance to the guidelines of this specific style make sure to only use subtle hints of dark red. This color in particular gives way to the the Office Siren's sexy and flirty aspect.

Writer's note: I truly believe this trend will be here to stay. Although it may fluctuate in popularity at times, its use of simple yet graceful pieces of clothing make the style timeless. Additionally, the origins of the trend influences women to exude confidence and poise when repping the style of The Office Siren.
